Yooper discovers cactus in Michigan's Huron Mountains
BIG BAY, MI – An ecology researcher found what may become the first confirmed example of eastern prickly pear cactus in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, discovered among the highest elevations in the Huron Mountains.
“To see it in in flower, too. And I was surprised by the species,” said Ryne Rutherford, doctoral student at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. “Its regular range is much farther away – on sandy Lake Michigan, hundreds of miles from here.”
