The plants used in Chris Beardshaw's gold medal-winning RNLI Garden from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show will be sold at a public plant sale in Dorset this Platinum Jubilee bank holiday.
The sale (Friday 3rd June from 10am to 4pm at the RNLI College in Poole) will give a second life to the hundreds of mature, show-quality plants used in the garden, at 'greatly reduced retail prices', all while raising further funds for the lifesaving charity.
Chris primarily worked with Kelways Plants for his Chelsea garden and included peonies, geraniums, iris, hostas and ferns in his planting scheme.
The garden was a calm and confident oasis, providing space to reflect on the many elements of the RNLI's lifesaving work. Herbaceous perennials created texture, form and foliage through a palette of whites, blues and pinks, and at the rear was a green oak pavilion with carved lettering and turned columns, spliced by a contemporary, green oak arcade. The textural Purbeck stone path flowed through the luscious borders, creating a harmonious look.
The RNLI Garden was part of the new Project Giving Back (PGB) initiative which launched in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and its effect on UK charitable fundraising. The unique grant-making scheme provides funding for gardens for good causes at RHS Chelsea from 2022 until 2024.
Award-winning plantsman and designer, Chris, whose garden came second place in the People's Choice Award, said: ‘As a life-long supporter of the RNLI, it was a huge honour to design and create a garden for this lifesaving charity. I'm thrilled that all the elements of the garden, including the plants, will go on to enjoy a second life and legacy outside of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show while continuing to support the RNLI's lifesaving mission.'
Aside from the plant sale, two large urns will continue to showcase Whichford Pottery's incredible work at the RNLI Support Centre, while the oak pavilion, Purbeck stone paving, topiary and hedging will be re-homed at the park sculpture by the Lakes at Pallington, Dorset. And the six trees will also be relocated to Dorset.
'We hope the plant sale will also encourage gardeners everywhere to host a fundraising garden party or other event for the RNLI as part of our forthcoming RNLI Gardens campaign,' Jayne George, Marketing and Media Director at RNLI Fundraising, adds.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution saves lives at sea, operating 238 lifeboat stations and more than 240 lifeguard units, with volunteers providing a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. Independent of Coastguard and the government, the RNLI depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service, which, since being founded in 1824, has saved over 142,700 lives.
• The plant sale will be held at the RNLI College, West Quay Road, Poole, Dorset, BH15 1HZ. See the full plant list here and please note, some very large structural plants will be included in the sale, so ensure you have suitable transport.
