WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — For the past two years, the lights at the old Neon Cactus have hardly flickered.

That all changed early Wednesday morning, at least figuratively, when the Neon Cactus announced a reopening on social media.

“THE RUMORS ARE TRUE!! The Best Party In West Lafayette WILL BE RE-OPENING VERY SOON!! We will begin hiring! Details to come! STAY TUNED! “EVERYONE SAY SOCIAL!” reads the post on the Neon Cactus West Lafayette’s Facebook page.

The bar, which originally opened its door back in 1992, had to close in September 2020, affected by the loss of business in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time of closure, the then-owner, Sheila Cochran, cited state restrictions limiting large gatherings to 250 people, and the Tippecanoe County health order that temporarily barred dance floors from operating in the county as key factors in closing.

The Journal & Courier reached out to Weida Apartments, who owns the old Neon Cactus property located on 360 Brown Street in West Lafayette, to confirm the announcement.

“We do have a lease on that property and that the person that has leased the property will be making an announcement within the next week or so,” said Cristie Weida Dombkowski, the property manager of Weida Apartments.

When asked about the identity of the new owners of the business, Dombkowski noted that information will be revealed at the time of the official announcement.

The social media post served as a catalyst for nostalgia for the old establishment and excitement for the new Neon Cactus.
