Upcoming summer events at the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy include outdoor volunteer days, guided walks and an author series.
The conservancy’s 1,600-acre preserve features 37 miles of trails.
Outdoor Volunteer Days are held each Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, starting June 4 at Abalone Cove. The goal is to groom and maintain trails to protect habitat from erosion.
On June 11, Outdoor Volunteer Day focuses on eliminating invasive species from the 22-acre Alta Vicente Reserve. Clearing out aggressive newcomers helps native species like gnatcatchers and cactus wrens.
On the first Saturday of each month, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy (PVPLC) holds a Guided Nature Preserve Walk with a trained naturalist.
The event teaches about unique wildlife in the canyon habitat, with views of the Los Angeles basin.
A Guided Nature Walk through recently restored wildlife habitat with ocean views is offered on the second Saturday of each month.
The PVPLC also provides “Nature BackPacks” on Saturdays and Sundays – backpacks filled with field guides, activities and equipment for ages pre-kindergarten to adults. The packs are checked out on loan from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
“Beauty of Nature” series author and historian Bill Deverell will present a lecture on Frederick Law Olmsted (landscape architect of Palos Verdes and New York City’s Central Park, among other landmarks).
The author of “Eden By Design: The 1930 Olmsted-Bartholomew Plan for the L.A. Region,” will include images of Olmsted’s intentions for open land in Southern California.
The second author of this summer’s series is Catherine Raven, to talk about her book “Fox and I: An Uncommon Friendship.”
A former National Park ranger, Raven tells of life in an isolated Montana mountain valley where she befriends a wild red fox.
The PVPLC has not yet confirmed a date for either author’s event.
