Library hosts art show on nature, surfing

The Friends of the Cardiff Library group hosts an art show featuring the work of local artist Brett Hoffman through Oct. 29 at the library, 2081 Newcastle Ave. The exhibit includes surfboard graphics, unique faces, and plein air landscapes. Water Polo Team holds fundraiser

The San Dieguito High School Academy Boys Water Polo Team is holding its annual Parents’ Night Out fundraiser 7 to 11 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Cardiff Beach Bar@Tower13 at 2633 South Coast Highway 101, featuring the band, 40 Proof, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Proceeds will go towards equipment, tournament fees and a goalie coach. No entry fee; attendees can make a donation during the event via a QR code. Tower 13 is providing the band and giving 20 percent of food sales to the team. CARLSBAD New exhibition at Cannon Gallery

The City of Carlsbad’s Cannon Art Gallery opened a new exhibition showcasing one-of-a-kind chairs, “celebrating the beauty, function and possibilities” of something essential to everyday life. The exhibition titled, The Chair, runs through Dec. 3 at the Cannon Art Gallery in the Carlsbad City Library complex, 1775 Dove Lane. The show features works by 16 artists ranging from fully functional furniture to pure art and sculpture. Admission is free. Library no longer has late fines

The Carlsbad City Library is eliminating late fines for overdue items that are returned to the library as part of its continuing efforts to make sure the library is accessible for everyone. As of Sept. 1, fines for overdue items are being waived, including any outstanding fines, for all items that are returned back to the library. Fees for lost or damaged items and interlibrary loans still apply. The library will provide two courtesy notifications when items are overdue. After 28 days overdue items will be marked as lost and the cardholder will be billed for the item’s cost, plus processing fees. When a lost item is returned, any associated bills will be canceled. Existing fees for lost or damaged items, interlibrary loans and accounts referred to collections will still need to be paid or resolved. Visit library.carlsbadca.gov.

GOP women’s group hosts local candidates

Volunteers sought for Haunted Corn Maze

Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation is looking for volunteers to help in the Haunted Corn Maze from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays in October at the Carlsbad Strawberry Fields, 1050 Cannon Road. The event is one of the foundation’s largest fundraisers, and proceeds will go toward enlarging space for its award-winning educational program. Costumes are provided. A free family-oriented Oktoberfest is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 25 along Mountain Vista Drive off El Camino Real between Wandering Road and Rambling Road, hosted by the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce. Live entertainment including Bavarian music and dance troupes, German food and beer, international refreshments, two beer gardens and local artisan products will be among the attractions of the event celebrating German heritage. Hospice holds Farm to Table fundraiser

The Oceanside Public Library is running free events in September to promote health and well being throughout the community. Selena Tribute Band to perform at MiraCosta

Volunteers sought for Senior Patrol

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department stations in Poway and 4S Ranch are looking for adults to join the Senior Volunteer Patrol. Duties include patrolling neighborhoods in Poway and 4S Ranch, checking on homes of residents on vacation, traffic control, and checking on the welfare of residents as part of the Sheriff’s Department’s “You Are Not Alone” program. Volunteers must be at least 50 years old, a U.S. citizen or legal resident who has applied for citizenship, and have a valid California driver’s license and car insurance. Volunteers must be of good moral character with no felony convictions and attend a two-week Senior Volunteer Patrol Academy. Volunteers typically work up to five hours a week. Side Street Strutters to perform

The Side Street Strutters presents “Shiny Stockings,” music from the golden era of jazz, at 4 p.m. Sept. 25 at Rancho Bernardo Community Church, 17010 Pomerado Road.
